Papap's Teeth by Danielle DeVor

Sara has a grandfather who has a rather odd obsession. Every time she sees him, he pulls a small wooden box out of his pocket, stares at it for a moment, then puts it back. It isn’t something he forgets to do- more like compelled.
One day, Sara is left with her grandfather while her parents go on a business trip. The box is nowhere to be seen until Sara gets ready for bed. The box is on the nightstand. Her curiosity is too much for her. What is inside the box will change her life forever.

***

I discovered Danielle DeVor earlier today at a Facebook event and she informed me that this book was free on Amazon. After spending the hour with her I decided I needed to check her out immediately!

Papap's Teeth is a very short story and I must say it left me really intrigued - I wanted to read more of it. I wanted to know if something bad happens after Sara passes on her gift. The story was very reminiscent (at least to me) of Goosebumps. Listen, that is a good thing in my book - I was a huge Goosebumps fan growing up.

I will definitely read more of this author. I feel maybe that free short was a ploy all along; get the reader intrigued so we have to buy her other books. Haha, well it worked in my case. I will definitely read one of her novels.

For a super quicky read of the horror(ish) variety, I recommend you check this out. It's free, so what have you got to lose?

Talking After Midnight by Dakota Cassidy

Shields up, sugar—things in Plum Orchard are about to get real.

Marybell Lyman is notorious for two things:

Her look. The wicked hairstyle, multiple piercings and practiced sneer that say: "Stay back—I bite."

Her voice. The syrupy lilt that's her bread and butter at Call Girls, the prim little town's flourishing phone-sex company.

Hunky handyman Taggart Hawthorn is mesmerized by the contradiction: such sweet tones inside such a spiky shell! He wants to know more about mysterious Marybell, to hear more of her sexy talk—all for himself.

But Tag's attentions, delicious as they are, have Marybell panicked. She's been hiding a long time. She's finally got a home, a job and friends she adores. She won't have it all snatched away by another stupid mistake—like falling in love. So when Marybell's past comes calling, she and the Call Girls will prove no one handles scandals like a Southern girl!

I received an ARC of this book for an honest review.

Aww man - this is by far my favorite Plum Orchard book. I'm full up, ya'll! I can't even put into words how perfectly constructed this story was. The plot was amazing, the most complex one. The love scenes were great, the banter between the two main characters was great. It was funny, sad - heartbreaking really - romantic, steamy...it was everything a contemporary romance novel should be. Utter perfection. When I think Dakota Cassidy can't get any better, she does! I am in awe of her storytelling talent. There is a new standard around these parts - Dakota ruined the curve for every one else. I will compare all contemporary romances to Talking After Midnight. It is THAT good.

I'm actually surprised, because though I liked Marybell just fine, out of all the Call Girls, she was the one that stood out the least to me. I thought for sure Em's story would have been my favorite. But as I said in my review of Something To Talk About, Em is much better suited as a secondary character. I still stick by that, Emmaline was amazing in this book; she works best when she isn't the heroine.

This is the last book in the Plum Orchard series (guess it's a trilogy with a prequel). I don't want it to end. I really just want to beg her for more.

Uncensored comments straight from Kindle (sort of - it was a PDF, I took notes)

  • "But it wasn’t as though there was any hiding from the three pretty faces full of concern, pressed against the glass of her front door like a trio of suction-cupped Garfields in the back of a car window." -  I'd forgotten all about those little guys!
  • You can tell Dakota loves The Walking Dead, a lot of references to the show in her books as of late. ;)
  • “I can’t just let you light my pilot for free.” - Oh, it'll be his pleasure *eyebrow wiggle*
  • Awww! Second sex scene was not only hawt but the ending was so sweet! Put a smile on my face.
  • HAHA Marybell's lack of self control when it comes to Tag is kind of pathetic, but in a VERY hilarious way. Cuz isn't that how love happens sometimes? ;)
  • DOBY! :'(
  • “I said you get the hell off this lawn or I’m gonna show you what a can of some good old-fashioned companionator whup-ass is, you bunch o’ flesh-eating vultures!” -  Oh LaDawn! This is what Dakota Cassidy does - in the middle of your heart breaking, and crying like a baby, you get this awesomely hilarious moment and it makes you laugh your ass off in between the tears and the snot.
  • “I’m tired of it. You upset my woman. That upsets me. I want to smash your face in right now. The only reason I haven’t is that Maizy’ll be home any minute and I know Em would ground me for life if Maizy saw your blood all over the kitchen floor.” - Loved the image that popped into my head. Emmaline grounding Jax - HAHAHAHAHA!

Everyone should read this book. Even if you don't read the other ones in the series, please do yourselves a favor and read this book - it is amazing.

Fangs Of Anarchy: Forbidden Alpha (Part 4) In The Zone by Dakota Cassidy

Claire Montgomery’s heart is in the right place. It is. Honest! Now if only she’d stop doing things that could make her heart stop beating forever…
He might as well admit it. Irish McConnell can’t stay away from Claire, no matter what all the rules say. And anyway, clan and pack politics have nothing on the fine mess he and Claire have gotten themselves into. From missing corpses to dastardly deals in the dreaded Zone, to a vital piece of information about what happened the night Gannon Dodd was murdered, they’ve jumped from the frying pan into the fiery pits of hell.

But even that can’t compare to the combustible heat generated by this sexy, forbidden paranormal pair.

***

Spoiler Alert!!!
Well now we know where Claire is - The Zone. Moron! It's hella dangerous in the Zone, it's the ghetto of the paranormal world. And she went by herself, without telling anyone. I'm with Irish on this one, throttle her ass!

One more part and all will be revealed - that's what Dakota promises at the end of part four and she better deliver! I am anxious for the conclusion of this serial. As I said, I'm not cut out to read serials, I'm too impatient. This particular serial is great and I want to find out so bad what happens - what it all means. At the same time, I know I'm going to be upset because Irish and Claire's story will be over. I love them together. I wish there were more of them together as a couple.

I hope Dakota gives us more. I know she's been toying with the idea of writing Liam's story - Irish's brother. I'm all for it, but I hope there's more scenes with Claire and Irish. *Prays to the writing gods*

We still don't know where Gannon's body went.

Demons walk the streets but angels do, too, and which is which may surprise you. No other 500+ page novel is released in weekly installments of 10,000+ words each accompanied by a music video and original EDM/dubstep song. Watch and listen every Monday at http://clubrook.angelsofanarchy.com or buy the soundtrack now at http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00K2DM7SS/

Temperance is running around flirting with all the girls - love it! Each episode has developed each character a bit more, which I really enjoyed. I'm starting to know them, some better than others. The Forest of Suicides was an interesting idea, and I would have loved to know more about it. Hoping they revisit that world in future episodes. Plus I'm all for harpies, which apparently live in the Forest of Suicides.

Part three of this serial was definitely better than part two, much MUCH better. Unfortunately, I've got hundreds of books to read and this serial did not pique my interest enough to continue with it. I'm positive things are going to get really good and interesting, I can tell, but I just don't have the patience to wait. Guess I'm more of an instant gratification kind of girl. But I do recommend you check it out if you don't mind episodic books.

I might revisit this serial in the future...

Fangs Of Anarchy - Forbidden Alpha (Part 3) Were In The World Is Gannon Dodd? by Dakota Cassidy

While Irish McConnell and Claire Montgomery try to hide their sizzling attraction for one another, and in order to keep the peace between his vampire clan and her werewolf pack, Claire begins to dig deeper into the mystery surrounding the very bad thing she's done (it's really bad!) based on a rather obscure clue.

To follow the clue, she makes plans to immerse herself in a place Irish would never allow her to go into alone, but in an effort to keep him out of her troubles with her pack, Claire makes a choice that could end up getting her killed.

But Irish has his hands full, too, because his efforts to protect Claire have gone very awry...

***

Warning: This is the 3 episode in the Fangs Of Anarchy serial, there may be a spoiler or two if you haven't read the first two books so continue at your own risk.

It's official, I HATE evil music cues! I am not cut out to read serials, the cliffhangers are slowly taking away years from my life. But like hell if you think I'm going to stop now. Fangs Of Anarchy has me hooked and I am Dakota Cassidy's bitch. I will read and torture myself every time a new installment comes out. It's THAT good.

In the last review for Fangs Of Anarchy, I mentioned my disappointment at not having a sex scene. Well it's like Dakota heard me because this book had a pleasant *wink* love making scene that I was very happy about.

This installment served more to move the story along, build us up, give us more questions; no real answers here. We still don't know who it was that drove Claire off the road - though we can all take a good guess. We don't know who Claire thought was going to be at the lighthouse - though I personally have a theory on who it was and how it's tied to Gannon. And this book's cliffhanger is probably the worst one yet! It's not that something happens per se...it's more like a certain main character doesn't know what's going on and we don't know either! And then it ends, and now we're stuck waiting for the next installment to find out what is going on. Is someone in danger? Is someone taking a nap somewhere? We don't know! And what's worse, something goes missing! Well actually, you could say two things go missing...but maybe one of those things isn't missing...WE DON'T KNOW!

Eagerly awaiting the next part!

Fangs Of Anarchy - Forbidden Alpha (Part 2) Girl Most Lycan by Dakota Cassidy

If Irish McConnell wasn’t so hot for Claire Montgomery, he’d muzzle her pretty werewolf mouth and tie her to his bed forever. No one would blame him. It’s the only way to keep her out of trouble…

Claire’s done a bad thing, the consequences of which point to more badness in her immediate future. And possibly Irish’s future…and the future of both his vampire clan and her wolf pack. But Claire’s determined to fix everything. All she has to do is find proof to justify her actions, avoid the drunken threats of her pack alpha, and stave off a race war between the vamps and weres. Easy-peasy.

The hard part? Staying away from her favorite forbidden vampire. Especially hard when he’s saving her hide every five seconds.

***

And the story continues! For those of you who haven't read the first part, walk away from this review as there may be a spoiler or two, and go read the first installment. As for the rest of you, this being a serial and all, the second part of Fangs Of Anarchy picks up right where we left off - Irish confesses to killing Gannon in an attempt to spare Claire. Claire, the stubborn, ungrateful maiden in distress does not appreciate what Irish is doing. Especially when the night before Irish made it clear that his number one priority - even above his clan - was his sister Hadley and her well being, which Claire understood 100%. But now it's a new day, and Irish seems to be singing a different tune.

Obviously, I can't tell you what happens, because you have to read the book, but I can say that the second episode is almost as good as the first. I say almost, because there wasn't any sex in this one, HEHE, and I really wanted to "see" Claire and Irish getting it on again. They're hot together, I can't help it. But, they do have this great scene together where they're just going back and forth with one another, verbally sparring. Irish shows more of his lighthearted personality and I think it's just the cutest thing. How Claire can resist such charm and charisma, is beyond me. I would have jumped his undead bones. ;-)

So if you have read the first part, I encourage you to continue, you will not be disappointing. And of course, just like the first book, this one ends in one killer cliffhanger. Actually, a bigger cliffhanger than the first time. And if you didn't read the first book, and read this review even after I told you not to, go read the first book and then read this one.

4.5 Stars!

Broken Hearts and Dusty Dreams by Lisa Bilbrey

"Riley Farris and Natalie Sloane were the best of friends who spent every summer together on the sandy beach of Mustang Island. Then, just when Riley is getting set to spend another summer with Natalie, she disappears. As the years pass, he struggles to understand what happened to the girl he knew. Until, one night while walking on the beach, he stumbles upon a woman who is broken and lost."

***

This novel was a good read. I am glad I took the time out to read it. I liked it because it had such a homey feel to it. It starts with giving us a bit of background on Riley's upbringing and I got a good sense of who he was and how he was raised. I liked his character because he went through a lot of stuff for someone so young. I related to him a lot when it came down to it. Being raised by just his mom for most of his life and her having to work hard just to provide. It's a fiction that mirrored my own reality.

Natalie's character was a bit more mysterious but normal when it came down to someone who had been abused for her whole life. She was raised a wealthy child but was the brunt of her parents' arguments and ill intents. Because of it she displayed major trust issues and a lot of fear, especially with the unexpected way her life turned out. I liked how the two main characters gelled though, as complete opposites but still remained best friends throughout their life. He protected her a lot, during her childhood and even through her return into his life. It was touching to see how they realized that they loved each other. What I liked so much was that I almost felt as if I knew the characters personally. Like if a friend of mine was recounting this from their own mouth. I appreciated that and it was a pleasant experience.

If I could be honest in my critiquing I would say only two things. I wish that the novel was a little bit longer. I didn't want the story to end. I wanted to know more... like, if their relationship would have stood the test of time, a little bit more about Nat's jerk parents, etc. The second thing I would say is that the novel kind of reminded me of The Notebook with the exception of the whole Alzheimer's thing that the Notebook had going on. To me it was the same kind of story, super romantic and deep on some levels.

Because the read was so short, I think I will give it 3 stars... just because I wanted more, even a few more pages would have made me feel better.

Unlovable by Cynthia St. Aubin

It isn’t every day a sexy demigod throws a pissed-off Cupid onto psychologist Matilda Schmidt’s couch and informs her the fate of the world depends on her ability to get him off his diapered ass and back to helping people fall in love.

Just when Matilda convinces herself she’s not hallucinating, in walks a Vegas hit man with a big gun and a bigger threat: pay back the million dollars she owes a notorious casino mogul, or wind up as fish food in Lake Mead.

Rocketing across country with a gun to her head, Matilda has a dysfunctional love-god in her laptop bag, a million dollar debt she has no knowledge of, and must convince the seductive hit man he’s snatched the wrong woman before he convinces her he might be the right man—for a night.

Can Matilda stay alive long enough to keep love from becoming history?

***

It's over already? Man, I was so digging this story! Uptight, sexless, psychologist, Matilda Schmidt goes on the adventure of a lifetime filled with mythological creatures and hot sexy men. Of course, she doesn't go willingly, more like at gun point, but that's neither here nor there. Matilda has to cure Cupid, and clear her name, all while being kidnapped, handcuffed, starved, forced to eat meat (she's a vegan), and endure wearing heels for 17 hours - ouch! And let's not forget Cupid's arrow...

I really enjoyed all of the characters the author created, from stuffy Matilda, all the way to Stefano the Fathead - yeah, you read that right. Colorful bunch. It's a short read, and I enjoyed every word of every page. Truly a nice, quick, hot, funny, entertaining read. I highly recommend you give this book (the first in its series) a try. You will not be disappointed! And last time I checked, it was FREE on Amazon.
